Miles of glide – Poseidon 12.6ft all round SUP review
Another new kid on the block, Poseidon SUP are UK based and produce cost-effective stand up paddle boards for those not wanting to break the bank. Their 12.6ft all rounder is designed for general recreational paddling, small waves and messing about at the beach.
The 12.6ft isn’t the lightest of boards but it should be noted that the construction is pretty bombproof, ensuring little knocks and scrapes are brushed off fairly easily. The red and white paint job, with bamboo veneer poking through, makes for an easy on the eye product. Plastic fins (that you’ll probably want to swap out in time) complete the look.
Heading off, it’s a very composed and sedate ride across flat water. Even with coastal chop bombarding the 12.6ft there’s plenty of stability and beginners or early intermediates will appreciate its non-threatening personality.
Tracking is good with an admirable top speed achieved and, as a recreational board to fit a variety of requirements, you couldn’t go wrong.
Heading out to small riplets (as waves were in short supply when testing) positioning and pivoting the Poseidon requires a bit of oomph. Once in position, however, it takes off and glides on the smallest dribble. In fact this trait is the board’s magic. If there’s any degree of push, from wave, wind or tide, the momentum is quick to build and it just keeps going (check our vid for evidence of this). Longboard style turns are the order of the day or simply cruise – whatever floats your boat (or SUP).
Conclusion
A traditional looking stand up paddle in many senses, Poseidon’s 12.6ft is one for all the family. A toy for dad to cruise about on, mom to have fun on or the kids to mess about with, it’s a versatile piece of kit for sure. Good tracking and glide make it easy to pick up small ripples and with momentum built it just keeps on going. Not the lightest construction but robust and durable nonetheless.
