Tips for turning your SUP (front side) in waves – stand up paddle surfing progression for aspiring wave heads

We get asked a lot of questions about stand up paddle boarding but of late we’ve been receiving queries about turning SUPs in waves. Any SUP can be taken into the surf and it’s relatively easy, with a bit of trial and error, to catch a wave on a stand up. Turning, carving and riding dynamically, however, often stumps many.

The main thing to get your head around is SUPs are wide and voluminous. To effectively carve a stand up paddle board requires the rider to take a proactive (a word we use a lot here at SUPM!) approach. It’s no good simply keeping your feet glued to the same spot. Moving nose to tail and  rail to rail is the ONLY way to achieve  best results.

Here are some SUP surfing tips to help your progression. Practice lots and who knows what you’ll accomplish.

The main points:

  • Keep your core tight at all times
  • Use your paddle
  • Everything follows your head
  • Be proactive with your foot placement
