XtraTuf Sharkbyte sustainable boat shoes

Words & photos: Tez Plavenieks

Born out of working on commercial boats in Alaska’s harsh weather environment, XtraTuf supplies a variety of tough, rugged, and practical footwear for all types of watery situations. In this instance, the brand’s Sharkbyte slip-on boat shoes are reviewed.

With such a pedigree, it’s pretty obvious that XtraTuf boat shoes will fit SUP and watersports environments. After all, the brand’s heritage is built of saltwater and briny seas. At face value, Sharkbyte kicks look like any other slip-on shoe. But there’s more to them than that.

Featuring a water-repellent DWR coating, breathable mesh lining, a sustainable regenerated ECONYL upper, a lightweight EVA insole, and a non-marking high-track outer sole, they’re certainly fit for purpose. More than that, though, they’re just seriously comfortable to slip into.

One of my other passions is rolling on fours, surf skateboard style. I’ve used the XtraTuf Sharkbyte boat shoes for skating on numerous occasions. I can honestly say they perform as well as any other more obvious skate shoe on the market. The super grippy sole is indeed a real winner. But as a before or after-paddling pair of kicks, they’re just as effective.

Conclusion
XtraTuf by name and nature, but not without superior levels of comfort. The Sharkbyte boat shoes will be a worthy addition to all stand up paddler wardrobes. And if you’re after versatility, then they’re also worth checking out.
